This home underwent a full remodel, requiring a complete landscaping overhaul to address both functionality and aesthetics. The property faced drainage issues, overgrown plants, a broken irrigation system, and a lack of a functional, enclosed flat space for kids and pets to play. Complicating matters, golf course regulations prohibited traditional fencing, while city code mandated fencing due to the addition of a pool.

To navigate these challenges, we designed a creative fencing solution that met all requirements. By positioning the play area adjacent to the pool, we were able to comply with the city’s pool safety regulations while adhering to golf course restrictions. A large retaining wall with a fence on top was constructed, providing a level, contained play area that seamlessly blended with the home’s indoor/outdoor flow. Each retaining wall block weighed 2,200 pounds, requiring heavy-duty equipment. To minimize wear on the yard, the team used protective mats during transport. The commercial-grade retaining wall was sealed to prevent mold, staining, and weathering, ensuring long-term durability.

The entire front and backyard irrigation system was overhauled, with 15 new zones installed and managed through the Rachio smart system app. This customized irrigation setup seamlessly integrated with the pool’s water fill and a hose bib, ensuring efficient watering for hard-to-reach areas. The zoning system allowed for tailored watering of different planting beds, supporting a curated selection of coastal-inspired plants that thrive in the Kansas climate.

To create a clean, low-maintenance play area, we installed artificial turf with built-in drainage, avoiding mud and debris from being tracked into the pool. As part of this space, we also integrated an in-ground trampoline with its own drainage system, ensuring a safe and dry play surface year-round. The turf was integrated with the irrigation system for pet waste management and cooling during hot summer months. The entire design prioritized porous materials for proper water drainage, ensuring a functional and long-lasting outdoor space.

The result is a seamless indoor/outdoor retreat, blending modern aesthetics with smart functionality. This transformation not only resolved the home’s landscape challenges but also created a beautiful, practical outdoor space that enhances the homeowner’s lifestyle.
